Knowledge Or Action?

Image
It's been said that knowledge is power. While that's true to an extent, it isn't the whole truth. Knowledge without action is almost useless. It doesn't help to be a genius if you never do anything with the knowledge. I tend to think of knowledge as ammunition and action as a gun. (It's a typical guy thought, I know but it works for me.) Think about it. If you have bullets and no gun, they're pretty much useless. If you have a gun and no bullets, the best you can do is throw (action) the gun at the target. Not as useless as the bullets (knowledge) since action without knowledge is more productive than knowledge without action The reason I've been thinking about this lately is that I've been reading article after article about how to make money, get high search engine ranking, find customers & prospects, motivate myself and others and several other subjects and realized that regardless of how much info I've gained, it's worthless if I d

We are All Heroes when Things are going Good but...

Image
What happens when things aren't going so well? These experiences are what truly build our character.Think about it. What do we learn from our experiences when all goes to plan? Nothing. We have no sounding boards, nothing going awry to allow us to bounce back and recover,no mid-game adjustments. We learn virtually everything from our arduous ordeals. Our ability to deal with adversity is what equips us to handle even tougher obstacles in the future. How we answer the challenge tells a lot about us and gives us a barometer of our strength of character, our resolve and ultimately, our will. ie. "Did we fold up and throw in the white towel when things took a turn for the worse "? ....or...."Did we have a damn the torpedo attitude even when the proverbial kitchen sink was thrown at us "? Life is a game and a tremendous challenge if we truly seek to become successful. We are continually tested and often,at what seems to be the worst junctures in our life. Ther

Determining Your Target Market

Image
When you want to market your products or services, the first thing you need to do is to determine your target market. Once target market is determined, you can then use the four P in marketing to decide how to approach your target market. The Four P referred here is product, price, place (distribution) and promotion. So, why is target market important? The main reason is that company exists for a reason. It needs to differentiate itself from competition in order to survive. For example if you have decided to sell bottled water to the general mass in the urban area, then good luck with that. In the US, Pepsi and Coke has widespread distribution of bottled water consumption through its Aquafina and Dasani brand. If you still insists on selling bottled water, then you need to narrow your target market. For example, instead of selling to the general mass, your target market for the bottled water can be physically active individuals who avoids thirst quenchers such as Gatorade when

Choosing The Right Writer

Image
Ever made a decision that you really wish you hadn't? We all have, so, you're in good company, but when it comes to copywriters, what company do you want to keep? There are a lot of writers out there. The strange thing is that there are an awful lot of inexperienced writers out there who have: - An over inflated sense of their own value - A severely impaired sense of their own ability - A wholly inadequate business knowledge - A plain daft charging structure! I can see you're smiling! That tells me that you've either met them, come across them, or worse - you’ve actually hired them! But how can you spot them and avoid them? How do you judge what's good, bad and simply awful? 1. Read their website… carefully Is it littered with spelling mistakes, or does it make daft claims about their wives' expensive habits? Does it ring with hyperbole - ultimate, fantastic, superb, unbelievable - and other such claims that are simply hard to swallow? 2. Ar

What Everybody Should Know... About The History & Development Of Communication

Image
Have you ever stop to realize just how important communication is to you.  Without being able to connect with other people it not only stops you from achieving your goals and desires, it could also threaten your mental and physical health.  Yet, many people just leave  their communication skills to happenstance and live in a world of misunderstandings, hurt feelings, loss of relationships and business disasters. Quite often they look for outside reasons for challenges or failures. Yet, they can overcome the challenges. History has shown just how vital communication is in order to grow, succeed and to become more than we are. When you look at the development of humankind and of our brains, you can understand the importance. In a study on the development of humankind, it was stated that many versions of humans started out, but due to a variety of reasons, they didn’t survive and became extinct.  The last two types stated to survive were the Neanderthals and the Homo sapiens. Love Writing Again

Image
If you belong to the few who like to write – if you enjoy "the finest melody the words make," the rhythm and pace of phrases and sentences, the architectural possibilities of paragraphs – do not read this article.  It is intended for those who don’t have such warm feelings for writing.  For those who experience great anxiety and discouragement every time they have to put some words to paper. We hate writing especially college or university written assignments for toil, anxiety they cause. We are tired of hearing severe words of ruthless criticism for being "unclear" or "vague" or "wordy” in our writings.  But still we can’t escape the necessity of writing, unless you choose to turn for help to a freelance writer.  Even for such people that seem “hopeless” from the first sight there is a possibility to become freelance writer. It sounds very disappointing that writing has become something intimidating and unpleasant. I don’t think it deserves

How To Write Cover Letters That Work

Image
Frequently there is confusion about the exact meaning of the term "cover letter". That's because when most people use that term, they don't realize that there are TWO main types of cover letters. There are "document transmittal cover letters", and there are "resume cover letters". Some people have even gone so far as to name ALL letters “cover letters”. That’s plain wrong of course, but there are some actual books/ebooks that have been published  referring to cover letters as if all types of letters are cover letters. Go figure? DOCUMENT COVER LETTERS A document cover letter is a letter of transmittal that explains and conveys an attached document to a second party. The types of documents that this type of cover letter is used for typically include: reports, plans, legal papers, applications, manuscripts, contracts, travel documents, booklets, manuals, brochures, product samples, photos, artwork, etc. A document cover letter is norm

How To Write A Better Thesis

Image
The idea of writing a thesis is terrifying for many people. Not only is it quite possibly the longest paper of your college career, it’s also the most important. A good thesis will essentially sum up the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired as a student and show readers that you’re truly ready to enter your chosen field (or, perhaps, that you already have). It’s an overwhelming task, to be sure, one that almost always needs a guiding light. The following tips will help you understand the process of thesis writing before you begin work on your masterpiece. START EARLY This is perhaps the most crucial element. Starting early (at least eight months to a year in advance of your presentation) enables you to try possible topic ideas and dig deep with your research. Come up with several research possibilities, and get your hands dirty immediately; sift through research related to these ideas, read as much as possible, see what’s out there. In the course of this preliminary research, y

Feedback, the Beauty and the Bane

Image
I use the words: feedback, review and critique interchangeably to mean the same thing in this article. I love getting critiques.  It makes me feel acknowledged and important.  Someone took the time to think about my work and give feedback.  What a precious gift. An online writing group is the place to learn how to take and use criticism in a supportive environment.   Criticism is the bane of every writer, but a novice is much more vulnerable.    An unthinking,  harsh review can discourage so badly, the writer may give it up right then and there.  The writing group you choose should be helpful and nurturing.   Criticism should be honestly encouraging along with being honestly helpful.  If you find no encouragement, find another group as quickly as you can. Don’t be discouraged if you feel you received a negative critique.  If your work were totally hopeless, you probably wouldn’t have gotten a critique at all.  The reviewer cared enough to spend time on you - that’s a good si

Characters In A Romance Novel

Image
Before you even begin writing your novel, you need to know who your characters will be. Minimally, you would want two major characters, the hero and the heroine. They will interact mostly with each other throughout the novel. How they interact with each other will determine the outcome of the story. Will they resist each other in the beginning of the story and by the end, fall in love? Or will they fall in love in the beginning of the story and then be driven apart by conflict? Once you’ve chosen them, then you need to decide what age they are, their personality traits, and their names. AGE Age-appropriate actions are paramount to development of the character. If the heroine is in her teens, she will react differently to situations than if she is in her late twenties. The same goes with the hero. In a romance novel, the typical heroine is in her early twenties, while the hero is older. If he is in his twenties, he shouldn’t be shown as a tycoon, unless of course, he inherited t

Forget About "Talent"! Part 2

Image
The truth is that if “talent” exists, it seems to be the capacity for long, concentrated periods of tunnel-vision focus, combined with a unique capacity for digging into themselves to find truths most of us are reluctant to reveal. These phenomenal men and women sacrifice outside interests, relationships, and sometimes their health and sanity to focus on their divine obsession. And yes, if you find a group of these people, some will rise higher than others. But the primary gift of art is to be able to spend your life in the act of creation. And to do that, you don’t need to be “the best” (whatever THAT means). All you need to do is to get into the top twenty percent in your field, and you’ll do just fine. And that is achievable with focus and honesty. But what exactly do I mean by that? FOCUS 1) Can you write 500 words a day for twenty years? 2) Can you concentrate for an hour at a time without stopping for coffee, phone calls, or bathroom breaks? 3) Can you shut out the

Forget About "Talent"! Part 1

Image
How is a writer to access her deepest and most powerful wells of creativity? How do we tap into our talent, our genius, our greatest potential for success? Writing classes often tell us how to plot, or structure, or build characters, or create poetic images, but the question of accessing our excellence is a slippery and elusive one. It is possible we’ll need to go outside our usual sources to find an answer. Many will merely say “be born with talent,” coldly suggesting that writers are “born” with a particular amount of potential, and that one either has this or not. And you know? There is a certain amount of truth to this. It is hard to argue with the idea that geniuses like Mozart or Shakespeare were gifted. But the nature versus nurture argument is both fascinating and, for the average person, irrelevant. After all, since we can’t go back and choose our grandparents, what are we to do? Just abandon our dreams of excellence if we don’t happen to be one of the gifted few? I

Freedom of Speech

Image
Freedom of speech in mass media must be considered one of the major achievements of our modern age alongside with Internet and latest discoveries in medicine. We have a precious chance of making our judgments based on different points of view presented in various informational sources. A struggle for freedom of speech starts from the ancient times. The tradition of freedom of speech came to us from Greece. Greeks cultivated freedom of speech and held special forums, where famous orators performed and people could have their say. People always longed to be free of any obligations and formalities, built up by a state, but even now there are limits to the freedom given to mass media that are considered the speakers of the public. Some journalists and politicians consider censure to be illegal and try to limit the censure percentage. According to the last data provided by CNN, the level of censure varies from 80% till 10% depending on the level of prosperity and political situation i

The Five Phases Of Feedback

Image
You may have heard about the five phases of grief. Psychological professionals have outlined the pattern of emotions that humans cycle through during the grieving process. As a writing professional, I’ve discovered the five phases of receiving feedback. Any writer who is advancing in their career has been through the sometimes shocking experience of having her work critiqued. Cycling through these five feedback phases is normal. Getting stuck in any of them, however, could bring your writing career to a painful halt. See if you recognize yourself at any of these phases: Denial. Defensiveness sets in. How could they say that about your character? Can’t they see how perfect she is? You go home and rant to your spouse about how clueless your critique group is. You shore up a line of defense and tick the points off on your fingers while your beloved nods and smiles. Depression. What? Your draft isn’t perfect? After all that work… you realize that your blossoming talent doesn’t hold

Writing Contests: Building Writing Credentials

Image
One of the ways many writers can successfully add credentials to their portfolio if to participate in a variety of literary contests. This type of contest encourages writers to put their best foot forward in both creativity and attention to detail. It is true that there are some contests that provide a cash award for their top finishers, but there are also publishing scams that will accept your work regardless of quality. When you receive notice that your work has been accepted for publication it can be a real boost, however, a quick look at many writer’s websites can help you define the contests that are essentially vanity publishers willing to print just about anything if they believe you will purchase copies of the book for friends and family. Creates AMAZING eBooks & Reports In  5 MINUTES  Without Typing Any Words Many cash award writing contests cover the cost of prize awards by charging an entry fee. This factor often discourages many writers who may not feel confi

Getting Read, Reviewed and Rated - Are You Ready?

Image
You’ve decided to join a writing workshop to show your work and hone your skills.  Right? You’ve read in the ad’s that, ‘members read and give constructive reviews.’  You want to be read!  Did you quit reading before the end of the sentence?  Did you miss the part about the critiques? With excitement you think: “Will anybody read it? Will they like it?”  Then, you take the plunge and, Merry Christmas!  It was read!  And it was critiqued.  Oops. “ but I didn't expect anyone to rate my things!  the "SPELLING & GRAMMAR POLICE"sent me a low rate!” I’ve had more then a few express surprise at actually being reviewed. They don’t think to proofread or check their formatting, then they’re hurt when they receive a low rate. Being critiqued is not easy to take by anyone, but especially for beginning writers. Writing is our personal thoughts and feelings, our ‘babies’; and we want to protect them for as long as possible. Creates AMAZING eBooks & Reports In

Get Help With Invitation Wording

Image
If you are trying to write an invitation to an important event or celebration, don't let yourself struggle with finding the perfect invitation wording all on your own. There are several great but perhaps unexpected sources you can use to help get the right invitation wording for your needs. The first source of great invitation wording, although perhaps not the most practical for everyone, is to hire a professional writer to help you write the invitation wording. A professional writer is, obviously, a professional who is trained and able to help with all your writing needs. You should have no problems entrusting even the most serious and elegent invitation wording needs to a professional writer. You can find professional writers in your area in the phone book or by doing an iternet search. Another great source of invitation wording is to talk to people who have done invitations like yours before. For example, if you are trying to come up with the right invitation wording for

Mystery Writing: Incorporating Various Non-Legal Professions

Image
The mysteries of the "Golden Age" featured amateur detectives who became embroiled in solving crimes accidentally, meaning they just happened to be 'on the spot' at the time the crime occurred. In modern mystery novels, however, there seems to be a trend towards making the protagonist/amateur detective become involved with the mystery through his or her profession or hobby. One of my favorites of this type is Vicky Bliss, an assistant curator of the Munich National Museum in the series penned by Elizabeth Peters. Creates AMAZING eBooks & Reports In  5 MINUTES  Without Typing Any Words Vicky's adventures revolve around missing antiquities or stolen art. Recently, I began reading The Blue Rose: An English Garden Mystery by Anthony Eglin. In this novel, two amateur gardeners experience crime and mayhem when they discover blue roses growing in the garden of the home they'd just purchased. I believe, very strongly, that one should study the curren

[VIDEO] A Powerful Technique For Clear Thinking | Khalil-Ghibran

Learn to resolve your "mind irritations," by watching what's going on in your head. This takes practice, but you can start now. Maybe a phone call you need to make has been quietly bothering you all day, just below consciousness. Perhaps you are worried about an upcoming meeting. Tune in to your mind. When you become aware of all these stressors, small and large, do something to let them go for the moment. For example, make that phone call, or just put it on your "to do" list and your mind will let go of the concern for now. Just bringing a problem to full consciousness and telling yourself something like, "There is nothing I can do about this until Friday," will often stop the unconscious worrying. [VIDEO] How To Master The Art of Conversation | Khalil-Ghibran

The art of conversation is a learned skill that is common among successful, energetic people. If you are unable to effectively express yourself in any situation, you will likely find that you do not attract the attention and command the respect that is bestowed upon some others. People who talk freely and easily with others usually find more professional and personal fulfillment than those who are introverted and silent. If you want to improve your professional and social standing, learn to communicate efficiently and in a positive manner. You will notice a dramatic difference in the way other people perceive you if you demonstrate self-confidence and project a friendly, informed image. Building Courage to Improve your Personal Life When you build courage, you start to improve your personal life. Building courage will help you take risks to a brighter future that you ordinarily would not take. When you build courage, you put fear behind you. courage is the process of admitting that you have fears, yet you are willing to find a way to defeat those fears and not allow these fears to take control of you. It is ok to experience your fears at appropriate times. For instance, if a bus is heading in your path, swerving you have a right to fear. There is nothing wrong with healthy fear. The problem is you have to put healthy fear in its place and unhealthy fear out of your life.

What does the expression 'time management' really mean? In considering that no one can ever hold time back or force it on or even attempt to make it stand still, the expression is really a misnomer. No one can manage time; it is impossible to manage something over which you have no control whatever. You just cannot win.

Make Money as a Ghost Food Writer

Image
Like high pay? Have self-confidence? Know food; write well? Ghostwriting may be a career move for motivated writers who are willing to write for high pay but no credit or byline. Simply put, a ghostwriter is someone who writes a book, speech, article or editorial that will be published under someone else’s name. Celebrity autobiographies are usually written by ghostwriters and established novelists have been known to supply the plot and outline to a ghostwriter who takes the book the rest of the way to publication. People who need ghostwriters are those who have a recognizable name or business and either cannot write well enough for publication, or do not have the time to write for publication. In a ghostwriting foodie’s dream, a celebrity chef will give the idea, notes, outlines and rough drafts to the writer who will write, rewrite, research, interview and edit the manuscript heading to a publisher.
